Murray 'fotoglider' Hay I hold a UK PG pilot rating and fly over 300 hrs in a good year, when not working or flying I write or talk on paragliding theory/safety maters for the leading American magazine 'Paraglider magazine' which also sponsors the radio show i guest on. Age? Normally answer is 'Ice Age' but not quite that old yet! (+ it is a cool movie) Marital Status? Unfortunately single! but you can't win them all! Where do you live? In Tayside Scotland surrounded by flying sites. Occupation? Commercial photographer running my own business for about 20 years. Previous occupation? Electronics back in the days when a 1k chip was a pretty neat idea! Also just about everything to do with night clubs and bars you can think of, when not wearing out lots of pairs of dance shoes! How and when did you start flying? In the late 90's after selling my boats (to much money and time especially if the wind drops and the tide is against you) I needed a challenge that would use the skills that I had in weather and aerodynamics etc. but would let me get back to work quickly if the pager went off (hence the interest in spot landings) went out to test a wing a local pilot was selling along with a few others, promptly took of and flew circles around everyone including the CP who was selling it (he did not believe I had never flown before!) called him a couple of weeks later and offered £850 for the full kit and went on to log just under a 100 hours in the first year. Which pilots most influenced you? Having seen the standard of the local pilots I have to say all of them. Dodgy take offs and short flights on wings that were a lot more modern than mine convinced me that after having a good study of the 'theory' in the books they use that I would live a lot longer if I avoided the training they had received! When and where was your most memorable flying experience? Tricky one.... If I could only name one flight perhaps taking off at the bottom of Bishop on one day when every other paraglider pilot was bottoming out and flying until sunset with a best height for the day of 5,500 ft! Then when I did land, chatting to two HG pilots who had never seen a paraglider out fly them as well as having never seen some of the aerobatic manovers I was practicing. More to follow ................. |
